WHO Benefits From EMDRTreatment ?

The therapeutic goal for people who have experienced early, difficult incidents in their life as well as those who have lived through emotional turmoil as adults is a form of therapy which empowers the client to heal and permits one to experience personal growth and a fulfilled, happy life. There are a number of traumas that have been treated with a new type of therapy called EMDR.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and was created by Dr. Francine Shapiro.

EMDR can be used to treat trauma, anxiety, depression and a number of other disorders that may have influenced by earlier incidents or traumas.

Initially EMDR was used with post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) and with what are called capital "T" traumas. These traumas include car accidents, incidents related to war-torn areas, fires, air plane disasters, bombings, rape, and assault/crime victims. Small "t" trauma can also include physical and emotional abuse as well as being "put down" by friends, family, and associates in school and earlier in life.

These "t" events in a persons life may cascade throughout one's life and impact both self esteem and one's sense of self worth. When a person is used to being belittled throughout life s/he may look for negative attention that only reinforces a low sense of self-worth.

Quite often people come to EMDR treatment after having had psychotherapy, talk therapy, counseling, psychoanalysis, cognitive therapy and other types of spiritual or emotional therapies. It appears that for some
EMDR has worked for many people who have tried the more traditional forms of treatment and have not had
relief.
